Regent's Park

Local History

Originally called Marylebone Park, it belonged to the Abbess of Barking until Henry V111 claimed it during the dissolution of the monasteries. In 1539, Geoffrey Chamberlain set aside more than 550 acres of the land as a hunting park. It was soon surrounded by a ditch and fence to keep game inside, and the poachers out. When the King was executed in 1649, the land was sold along with the rest of the Crown's property. The vast amount of wood was soon cleared and sold for the then princely sum of £1,770 and 8 shillings.

It was then that plans were drawn up to link the Park with Westminster via Regent Street. Due to the efforts of the Prince Regent to complete the link and redesign the park, the park was renamed Regent's Park. It was completed in 1828, with additions like the London Zoo, and the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society (now the Queen Mary's Rose Garden).

World War II took a heavy toll on the park, and it was not until the late 1970s that Regent's Park was returned to its former glory.

Architecture

Portland Place ends up in Nash's beautiful Park Crescent, the perfect introduction to his masterpiece, Regent's Park itself. The highlights of the park today are the London Zoo, The Rose Gardens, Rockeries and Open-Air Theatre in Queen Mary's Gardens, and the Boating Lake, but the scale of its rolling, carefully planned layout makes the whole place a joy to explore.
