Golders Green is a thriving area in North West London with a large Jewish population, although the area is also popular with Japanese and South East Asian families.
Golders Green was originally part of the NW4 (Hendon) postal district, which was split in two, creating the new NW11 postcode. This is why it is out of sequence with the alphabetical pattern of London postal districts!
Among the many public figures to have been cremated at Golders Green crematorium are Sigmund Freud, Peter Sellers, Kingsley Amis, Stanley Baldwin, TS Elliot and Amy Winehouse.
Beatle George Harrison once recorded an unreleased track called ‘Going Down to Golders Green’.
Ivy House on North End Road is the former home of the internationally renowned Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.
The concrete blockhouse entrance to ghost tube station North End can still be seen today on Hampstead Way – it is the only London Underground station to be abandoned before completion.
Golders Green is known to have existed since the 13th century although it grew rapidly with the opening of Golders Green underground station in 1907. It is a cosmopolitan area with a huge choice of restaurants from kosher food through to Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean and Italian. This is in addition to over a dozen coffee bars and a number of specialist food stores including two Japanese, two Iranian, one Korean and one Malaysian.
As a multicultural neighbourhood, Golders Green is home to a number of places of worship with several synagogues, a Greek Orthodox cathedral, Coptic Orthodox church and large Hindu temple. The area boasts a wide variety of housing ranging from flat conversions and three-bedroom semis to large detached family homes.
Brent Cross Shopping Centre is nearby and the open space of Golders Hill Park is a popular destination with its gardens, play area, tennis courts, ice cream parlour and a pond with ducks and flamingos.
Golders Green station is on the Northern Line with the main bus station located on its forecourt. This is a major hub for London Buses and also for National Express coaches.
