Property for sale in Hampstead Garden Suburb
Hampstead Garden Suburb is a beautiful and tranquil enclave in North West London, tucked away to the north of Hampstead, west of Highgate and east of Golders Green. Hampstead Garden Suburb is widely recognised as being one of the finest examples of early 20th century town planning.
When Hampstead Garden Suburb (‘the Suburb’, as it is known by locals) was created in 1907 as a social experiment, it was intended to ‘cater for all classes of people and all income groups’.
Its founders were a cosmetics heiress turned social worker, Dame Henrietta Barnett, and engineer, architect and town planner, Sir Raymond Unwin.
The late film star Elizabeth Taylor once lived in Wildwood Road, Hampstead Garden Suburb.
The Suburb is home to the Henrietta Barnett School, a grammar judged the Sunday Times Secondary School of the Year in 2011.
It is a wonderfully peaceful place to live – church bells are not even allowed to ring!
The Suburb was meticulously designed according to a set of rules that fulfilled its founders’ vision of low housing density; wide, tree-lined roads; houses separated by hedges not walls; and free public access to woods and green spaces. Today, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust enforces these principles to ensure that all new builds, conversions and extensions are in keeping with the distinct character of the area. The result is a unique residential area in the heart of the bustling metropolis.
Hampstead Garden Suburb consists of the ‘old’ suburb – roughly the part falling within the NW11 postcode – and the ‘new’ suburb, which largely falls in the N2 postcode. At the heart of the suburb is Central Square, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a focal point, which features a large area of lawn and tree-lined walks. It is overlooked by two imposing churches and some magnificent early 20th century Lutyens villas. In the three side streets running off the square, housing includes tiny terraces, 1930s semis and stylish red brick arts and crafts homes. This quiet, understated area is home to several notable figures including TV personalities, eminent scientists and even international royalty.
Many wonderful homes front the Heath Extension on Hampstead Way and Wildwood Road or back onto Hampstead Golf Course on Winnington Road.
