The Suburb was meticulously designed according to a set of rules that fulfilled its founders’ vision of low housing density; wide, tree-lined roads; houses separated by hedges not walls; and free public access to woods and green spaces. Today, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust enforces these principles to ensure that all new builds, conversions and extensions are in keeping with the distinct character of the area. The result is a unique residential area in the heart of the bustling metropolis.

Hampstead Garden Suburb consists of the ‘old’ suburb – roughly the part falling within the NW11 postcode – and the ‘new’ suburb, which largely falls in the N2 postcode. At the heart of the suburb is Central Square, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a focal point, which features a large area of lawn and tree-lined walks. It is overlooked by two imposing churches and some magnificent early 20th century Lutyens villas.
