Highgate Village, in its prime hilltop location on the eastern edge of Hampstead Heath, retains all its traditional charm, largely thanks to the conservation efforts of the local community and the Highgate Society, which protects its unique character.

5 Things you should know about Highgate

Highgate Village sits on top of a hill 375 feet (114m) above sea level at its highest point, giving stunning views over London.

Highgate Hill was the route of the first cable car built in Europe, which operated between 1884 and 1909.

Highgate plays a starring role in the popular story and pantomime Dick Whittington and a statue of Dick and his faithful cat at the Whittington Hospital commemorates the tale.

Statesman, lawyer and philosopher Francis Bacon, who died at the home of his good friend the Earl of Arundel in Highgate in 1626, has a street named after him.

Highgate’s historic feel has provided the backdrop to many films including the Hammer Horror Movies of the 1970s, Shaun of the Dead and Dorian Gray.

Unusually, Highgate is split between three London boroughs: Haringey in the north, Camden in the south and west and Islington in the south and east. Archway and Highgate underground stations, both on the Northern line, give quick and easy access to central London.

One of the most expensive London suburbs, it is easy to see Highgate’s appeal. Just four miles from the City, it boasts many green open spaces, including the eastern part of Hampstead Heath, as well as three very special ancient woods and Waterlow Park. At its heart, Highgate Village features smart pubs, gourmet restaurants and attractive tree-lined streets interspersed with historic landmarks. The High Street is mostly made up of individual shops and boutiques including the ‘High Tea’ Teashop and ‘Hair of the Dog’, the stylish boutique and grooming parlour for classy cats and discerning dogs.

Steeped in history, Highgate is famous for its gothic Victorian cemetery, the final resting place of notable figures such as the philosopher Karl Marx, chemist and physicist Michael Faraday and novelist George Eliot. It is also the site of exclusive Highgate School whose past students include poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, inventor Sir Clive Sinclair and logician John Venn (who introduced Venn diagrams).

Although there is a scattering of 18th century and some 1680s housing, Victorian houses and terraced properties dominate the area. Property styles include 1930s built semis, more modest suburban housing and a number of converted and purpose-built blocks of flats. The most prestigious and expensive homes can be found around the village itself with a choice of townhouses, grand mansions in sweeping grounds, gated properties and private estates.

Fitzroy Park, Milfield Lane and The Grove have a country feel and are among some of the most sought after locations.
The Fair in the Square in June each year attracts thousands of local people from the community with its live music, children’s activities, stalls and entertainment.
