North London Area Guides

Temple Fortune is a residential suburb to the north of Golders Green. With the open spaces of Hampstead Heath just a short walk away and convenient road access to central London and the north, it is an appealing place to live. The nearest tube station is Golders Green (on the Edgware branch of the Northern line) and the neighbourhood is well served by bus routes on the Finchley Road.

5 Things you should know about Temple Fortune

The first historical reference to Temple Fortune is on a map c1754 but a settlement is thought to have existed here since around 1240.

Its main shopping parade is built on the site of the former Temple Fortune Farm dating back to the 18th century.

Temple Fortune’s development from hamlet to suburb accelerated in 1907 with the establishment of neighbouring Hampstead Garden Suburb, whose residents rely on its shops.

A block of flats now stands on the site of the grand Orpheum Theatre, which closed in 1974, just two years after a visit from the Queen.

Barbara Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor and Elaine Paige are just some of the well-known graduates of the Aida Foster School of Drama, which operated until 2003 from premises on the Finchley Road.

Housing largely consists of semi-detached family homes, punctuated by much sought-after bungalows on Decoy Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue and larger detached homes on Parkway, Princes Park Avenue (which runs through to Golders Green), Oakfields Road and Cranbourne Gardens. The Pantiles, a listed building at the heart of Temple Fortune on Finchley Road, offers purpose-built apartments of varying sizes.

Temple Fortune’s main shopping street is flourishing with a number of well-patronised cafés and shops (including an M&S foodstore and Waitrose), independent butcher, specialist Japanese food shop and kosher bakery and restaurant.
